Thank you,
Barbara Schock, for sharing your delightful tales of Sandburg and 19th century
Galesburg & American history.
Chauncey Sill Colton (1800-1885)

Colton Park
By Barbara Schock
Colton Park, next to the Amtrack Depot, is named for
Chauncey S. Colton. He was a central figure in bringing the railroad to
Galesburg in 1854.
He was born in Pennsylvania in1800, but his family soon
returned to Massachusetts. He grew up and was educated there. In 1820, he went
to Maine and later married Emily H. McLanathan. After living in Maine for a
number of years, Colton decided there were too many rocks and too much bare
ground to make a living.
In 1836, Chauncey brought his wife and children to
Galesburg. While living in a log cabin with another family, he built a small
wooden building at Log City, about a mile away. On May I, 1837, Colton received
the first merchant’s license in Galesburg. He filled his store with items for
sale which were needed by the other pioneers. He would take most anything in
trade for his merchandise. This practice helped many farmers who were already in
debt for their farms.
Some years later, Colton erected a brick building on the
northwest corner of the Public Square and conducted a mercantile business from
it. (This building stood until 1970.) He was the first person to ship produce
from area farms to markets in the East. Beef and pork, wheat and corn were
shipped down the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers to New Orleans. Then the goods
were transported to New York and Liverpool, England.
Mr. Colton was a man of vision. He understood that
railroads would serve Galesburg businesses and help them grow. He and a few
other businessmen sought a charter from the State Legislature to form a railroad
company. About the same time, railroads were being built through Chicago. If a
railroad connected Galesburg with Chicago, it would mean more opportunities for
shipping products to more markets.
Chauncey Colton and Silas Willard subscribed $50,000 (more
than $650,000 in today’s money) to complete the amount needed for building the
tracks between Galesburg and Mendota. The company didn’t pay a dividend for more
than five years. The two men had to wait a long time to get a return on their
money.
With the consolidation of several small railroad companies
in Western Illinois, the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad was formed. Mr.
Colton served on its board of directors for more than twenty years. All of the
other directors were investors from the East. He saw the road grow into
thousands of miles of track across the western United States.
Chauncey Colton was one of the founders of the Galesburg
National Bank and the founder and the first president of the Farmers’ and
Mechanics’ Bank. He was a trustee of Knox College for forty years. Without him,
the growth of Galesburg would not have been so successful. A small plaque on a
cement base in was placed in the park in 1987 as a remembrance.
During his youth Carl Sandburg walked through the railroad
depot everyday to scan the headlines on the newspapers, to chat with people he
knew or to take a quick look at any pretty female travelers. His father, August
Sandburg, worked for the railroad for many years as a blacksmith’s helper.
