As a newspaper boy Carl Sandburg delivered papers along North Prairie Street. The house at 516 North Prairie Street was owned by several generations of the Post family. Even though the house faces Grove Street the address is listed as Prairie Street. In those days the driveway at the rear of the house was used for deliveries.

The lot on the northwest comer of North Prairie and East Grove Streets was the first sold from Reverend George Washington Gale's apple orchard. The orchard extended from his house on East North Street.
Edwin Post, a son of Peter Schuyler Post, purchased the land in 1§69 on which to build a home for his family.  He and his wife, Mary Doolittle, had twelve children.  In 1880 the family rnoved to Waverly, Nebraska.

His brother, Philip Sidney Post, moved into the house later in the year. He had served in the Civil War as well as an envoy representing the United States in Austria. He and his wife had three children.

A daughter, Harriet, married James C. Simpson on February 17,1897. He had been employed in several occupations before coming to Galesburg. He opened a lumber business on the property where the Knox County Jail now stands.

The Simpsons purchased the house in 1902. They raised six children there. Mr. Simpson died June 27, 1949. Mrs. Simpson continued to live in the house until her death in 1953.

The Galesburg Woman's Club was organized on April 1, 1911. Mrs. George W. (Hettie) Thompson was a leader in establishing the Woman's Club. She was also the first woman elected to the Galesburg School Board. Under her leadership the club increased its membership to more than two hundred the  first year. By the 1920s there were more than four hundred Woman's Club members. They often met in the Elks' Club at the corner of Prairie and Ferris Streets and later in the Garden Room of the Custer Hotel (now The Kensington.

The Woman's Club held monthly assemblies with programs of music and expert speakers. Members could also participate in departmental meetings which included the Home, Civics and Philanthropy and Arts and Literature. The topics included child culture and conservation, amusements, the commission form of city government, home and public, sanitation, nursing as well as historical and literary subjects.

For many years the members had desired a meeting place of their own. The Post-Simpson House was purchased in 1953 and remodeled to accommodate club meetings. Two apartments on the second floor provided income for maintaining the building.

The Post-Simpson House, as the home of the Galesburg Woman's club, has continued to serve the residents of Galesburg since that time. It is a convenient venue for other organizations to rent and for a variety of activities conducted by the Woman's Club.
