The seventh child of August and Clara Sandburg was born April 21, 1893, in the house on Berrien Street. She was given the name Martha Clara. Carl was already fifteen years old by the time his youngest sister was born.

Martha was a sickly and shy child. After high school she attended Brown's Business College and learned to type. For a time she worked for her older brother Martin, probably at the S & S Packing Company.

Martha married Roy Goldstone in 1913. He was employed by the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad as a switchman. While a house was being built for them, they lived with Clara Sandburg at 1586 West Main Street. She had moved there after the death of her husband in 1910. The new house was located on the west side of Farnham Street three doors north of Main Street. Their first child, Richard, was born February 3, 1915.

Roy Goldstone was killed in the Q railroad yard on July 25, 1919. A policeman knocked on the door early in the morning to inform Mrs. Goldstone of the accident. A second son, Charles, was born three weeks later.

Martha worked in a grocery store, a shoe store and other establishments to support herself and her two sons. Eventually, she moved in with her mother who lived on the southwest corner of Main and Farnham Streets. The abode still stands and is neatly maintained.

Many years later Richard remembered studying his lessons on the sun porch of that house. His grandmother died in 1926 and the Goldstones continued to live in the house. Martha became ill and died January 2, 1931.

Richard attended podiatry school in Chicago. He had adopted the Sandburg name as his own. During World War II, he served in the army as a medical technician. He was in the South Pacific for seventeen months.

Charles received a degree in political science from the University of Illinois. When it was his time to enter the army, he decided to do so as a conscientious objector. His brother and Uncle Carl tried to dissuade him. His education would have qualified him for a position in the Adjutant General's Office.

Finally, Charles requested that he be allowed to serve with a combat unit in a medical capacity. When the invasion of Europe began, Charles was serving with the Third Armored Division. While attempting to help a wounded officer, Charles was killed by machine gun fire. He was buried in a military cemetery near Epinal, France.

The army offered to return the body, but Richard decided it was best for Charles to be buried with his comrades.
