In an article with the above title, The Daily Mail on November 1, 1892, commented and reported on the activities of the previous evening.

Last night was Hallowe-en—the eve of All Saints day when the small boy is let loose and all kinds of deviltry, such as the ringing of door bells, taking gates off their hinges, tooting horns, throwing cabbage and yelling like a Comanche Indian. According to the time honored creed of the youth of Christendom hallowe-en is a lost evening if it is not spent in breaking some law of the community and the only unpardonable sin is to be caught by the police.

It is not half so much fun as it used to be, to plant cabbage heads against a neighbor's front door, to pelt his windows with corn, drive stray cows into his cellar, swap front gates at dead of night.

In some parts of the city the boys and girls played sad havoc with the sidewalks and fences. A party of about twenty-five boys and girls were out together and on Losey Street went to the trouble of demolishing some ten or fifteen rods of sidewalk (made of wood) besides carrying off what gates had been left out by their owners.

But it was the west part of the city that suffered the greatest damage. Every gate that could be secured was carried away and dumped into Cedar Fork. The result was that many people could have been seen this morning fishing around in the water after their property.

But the depredations were not carried to so great and extent as in former years for the reason that the police force kept a good watch and many a boy felt the sting of a long stick from the hands of their mothers.

There were numerous parties held, and they were all very pleasant ones. A number of the young friends of Miss Edith Nelson called at her home on North Cherry Street and gave her a nice little surprise. The evening was spent in all sorts of Hallowe-en pranks, making the occasion a most delightful one. The young folks wore skirts and pillow cases, presenting a hideous appearance. During the evening choice refreshments were served.

At the home of the Misses Anna and Hattie Erickson on Sumner Street a very pleasant party was given to a few of the friends of the young ladies. The time was spent with cards and other games and at 11 o'clock refreshments were served.

The Misses Colville (Carl Sandburg went to grade school with the girls) gave a Hallowe-en party last evening to a small company of friends at their home on North Academy Street. Games appropriate to such an occasion filled in the hours of a very enjoyable evening.

The Young People's Literary Society of the First Lutheran Church had a sociable at their hall last evening. A program of recitations, songs, etc., was given.
