"Red River Valley" - American Songbag (1927) - Carl Sandburg

"Red River Valley"

By Barbara Schock

From time to time, the songs from THE AMERICAN SONGBAG by Carl Sandburg are described in this series. Many of them he sang as a boy with his chums on Berrien Street. Or, they may have been part of classroom music lessons in grade school. Or, he may have picked them up in his travels across the country on lecture tours.

“Red River Valley” seems to be a highly traveled ballad from the nineteenth century. It first appeared in the Mohawk Valley of New York and traveled down the eastern seaboard to the mountain states of the South. The earlier version was titled “In the Bright Mohawk Valley” and was published as sheet music in 1896.

The earliest written manuscript was found in Iowa and dated to 1879. It was also sung in Nebraska about the same time. The Red River flows from Canada into the United States between Minnesota and North Dakota. There are several other Red Rivers in western and southern states.

Canadian folklorist Edith Fowke commented in 1964 that “Red River Valley” was probably the best known folk song on the Canadian prairie. The Hudson Bay Company owned much of the land which later became the province of Manitoba. Early French fur trappers settled and married into the local population. They were known as Metis. They held strong linguistic and religious convictions.

In 1867 the Canadian Confederation made moves to establish the area as a province. There was pressure by later arrivals to settle and farm the open prairies. The Metis organized and tried to keep their lands to themselves, but failed. The uprising is known as “The Red River Rebellion of 1869-70.”

Carl T. Sprague made the first recording of the song in 1925. It was titled “Cowboy Love Song.” The song was recorded in 1927 with the title of “Red River Valley.” Since then it has been recorded numerous times by individuals, choruses, in instrumental versions and as sound tracks for radio programs and movies. The sentimental lyrics seem to attract Swedish and eastern European artists as well. They have recorded the song numerous times.

Sandburg comments in THE AMERICAN SONGBAG that he had heard it sung “as if bells might be calling across a mist in a gloaming.”
