Decoration Day, 1881

by Barbara Schock

Three-year-old Carl Sandburg probably wasn't able to attend the Decoration Day parade and memorial observances on May 30, 1881. His parents, August and Clara Sandburg, more than likely had their hands full trying to keep him and his sister Mary from wandering away from the house on a nice spring day. In addition, although August Sandburg had a holiday from his work in the roundhouse of the CB&Q, he spent the day working in his garden and on his recently acquired house on Berrien Street.

For more than a month, the men of Post 45, Grand Army of the Republic, had been actively planning the commemoration of the dead Civil War soldiers who had been buried in Hope Cemetery. They had asked businessmen to contribute money to cover the cost of the speakers and other expenses. They had invited the school children to help strew flowers on the graves. A number of wives and daughters were asked to secure flowers. Arrangements were made for speakers, a band from Kewanee and the Mendelsohn Choir from Galesburg.

C.E. Lanstrum was named Marshall of the Day. He had been born in Sweden and settled in Knoxville in 1852. He served four years in the Civil War and achieved the rank of Captain.

The parade assembled at Main and Prairie Streets and marched to Hope Cemetery. The parade entered the cemetery by the northeast gate, which no longer exists. The Galesburg Police Force led the parade with the Kewanee Band providing music. Company B, Illinois National Guard, marched as did the school children of the city. Wagons of flowers preceded the members of the G.A.R. and city officials. Old soldiers who were not members of the G.A.R. had also been invited to participate in the parade. Citizens of Galesburg followed in their carriages and on foot.

At the cemetery, Post Commander Henry A. Allen, called the proceedings to order. The band played patriotic music between segments of the program. The Adjutant, Henry Carpenter, read the names of the veterans who had died during the preceding year. There were drum rolls and gun salutes at intervals during the program.

Reverend C.W. Tomlinson was introduced as the speaker of the day. He started by describing the devastation at the Battle of Bull Run and continued on for some time. The Evening Mail printed a large portion of the speech, but wasn't able to fit all of it into its pages.

Storm clouds appeared. When the thunder began, the crowd started to disperse. The Reverend Selah Brown was introduced as the second speaker of the day. He said “I am a traveling Methodist preacher, but am not used to talking to a traveling congregation. I was once introduced to an audience in this way: 'Mr. Brown will now deliver a few feeble remarks.' I prefer to speak to you on some other occasion, and therefore decline to say anything further'.”

The audience was dismissed and the G.A.R. men proceeded to strew flowers on the graves of fallen soldiers. The newspaper reporter stated that “was indeed the most befitting and impressive part of the programme.”
